Congratulations to the 2016 SAGE Fellows!!
The SAGE IGERT Fellowship at BCGC supports UC Berkeley graduate students conducting research related to green chemistry and green energy. The fellowship began in 2013 and now, three years later, there are 23 trainees and alum doing amazing green work on campus.
This year's six awardees are: David Garfield, Matt Smith, and Peter Waller from the College of Chemistry; Zachary Gima of Mechanical Engineering; and Kathy Tran and Beverly Shen from Environmental Health Sciences in the School of Public Health.
As we've done with all our past fellows, we interviewed the 2016 cohort about their research, and a few other fun things. We got all the trainees to describe their work in the simplest terms possible: using only the 1,000 most commonly used words in the English language (thanks to theUp-goer text editor). We also asked the students for a recommendation–a bright new green idea in the world that they’re excited about–and got some great responses. New on the Innovation Forum - Ask the Innovators: What will it take to Mainstream Green Chemistry?
On March 28th join ACS Green Chemistry at the Green Chemistry Innovation Portal for the third Ask the Innovators event: “What will it take to Mainstream Green Chemistry?” The mainstreaming of green chemistry is defined as when all chemistry — including chemistry and engineering research, education, and policy — becomes green chemistry. For an introduction to this topic, see this recent report from the GC3. During our online discussion, you can ask the author of the report, along with experts from industry and academia about what they think are the barriers to mainstream green chemistry, and what will have to happen to overcome them. See an example of a previous discussion here.

20th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference June 14 – 16, 2016 Portland, Oregon
Eric Beckman (University of Pittsburgh), Julie Haack (University of Oregon) and Adelina Voutchkova-Kostal (George Washington University) and John Frazier are working together to create the first ever Green Chemistry Design Challenge at the 20th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference June 14 – 16, 2016 Portland, Oregon.
The Challenge: Color dramatically influences human behavior from how we communicate to how we make decisions and is a ubiquitous component of consumer products.
In light of the economic, social and environmental impacts of color on society, students attending this year’s workshop will use the principles of green chemistry to design a comprehensive strategy for overcoming the challenges associated with dyes and pigments. The strategy should be economically viable, socially acceptable and have a net positive environmental impact compared to existing products/processes.
Attendees will learn about the history, chemistry, impacts, and business of color and will learn how to use a variety of tools to address the unintended biological activity of dyes and colorants. Student teams will have the opportunity to share their strategies as we explore the many facets of the problem.
**Space is limited to approximately 40 participants**
This design challenge will take place during the 20th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference on June 13th (before the meeting begins) at the Hilton Portland & Executive Towers in Portland, Oregon. The challenge will be guided by experts in the field, and will allow participants to engage with potential employers and experience how chemists, engineers, toxicologists and business experts can work together to think outside the box. The challenge is open to undergraduate, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.

Calling all students! The GC3 is now accepting applications for the 2016 Innovators Internship Program.
The Green Chemistry and Commerce Council (GC3) Innovators Internship program places technically proficient students into sustainability-related internships with our member companies. The interns will spend 10-12 weeks over the summer working within a GC3 member company and learning the skills needed in sustainable industry. They will also have the opportunity to attend the GC3 Innovators Roundtable and network with major companies who are contributing to the advancement of green chemistry.

Job Description:
A postdoctoral position is immediately available within the Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering at Yale University. The Center is seeking an analytical/purification scientist to support the research efforts of a multi-disciplinary team. The primary responsibilities of the successful candidate will be analytical testing, compound purification, and compound characterization.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will:
· Perform analytical and preparative scale chromatography of research molecules (small/large, chiral/achiral, milligram to gram scale).
· Perform analytical testing, including method development and validation of analytical procedures.
· Perform compound characterization. Analyze samples using appropriate instrumentation (NMR, HPLC, GC, MS, UV, IR, etc.). Summarize and interpret data.
· Maintain and optimize a wide range of analytical and prep scale chromatographic instrumentation (HPLC, LCMS, GCMS, GC-FID etc).
· Interact with Center scientists to support, refine, and further develop ongoing and emerging projects.
· Follow established laboratory safety procedures.
· Conduct activities under the supervision of the Center’s principal investigators.
Job Requirements
· PhD in analytical chemistry.
· In-depth knowledge of analytical and separations chemistry.
· Demonstrated expertise in modern chromatography and analytical methods.
· Expertise in data analysis/interpretation.
· Expertise in data management, documentation, and appropriate software.
· Excellent communication skills (verbal/written), interpersonal skills, and problem-solving skills.
· Self-motivated.
· Ability to work in a collaborative environment but comfortable working independently.
