Interdisciplinary Curricula

Our vision for green chemistry education is to make the principles and practices of green chemistry second nature to chemists, chemical engineers, environmental health scientists, policy makers, innovators, business leaders, educators and the public. We are designing curricula to teach society's future leaders to think critically about new technologies. Building on innovation in chemistry education developed at leading universities in the U.S. and abroad, we are creating interdisciplinary curricula that can be readily adopted by educators throughout California and the nation. At the undergraduate level we are designing new laboratory curriculum to ensure that chemistry students can:

  • Identify, evaluate, and minimize the use of hazardous chemicals;
  • Understand the origins and the fate of chemicals in the environment;
  • Design safer and more efficient chemical reactions and processes;
  • Gather data and effectively use both qualitative and quantitative metrics; and
  • Communicate scientific data and concepts to both experts and the general public.

At the graduate level, we are engaging students from across the Berkeley campus in collaborative learning and research. Two semesters of new course modules will introduce the fundamentals of green chemistry to multiple disciplines. These courses, along with cross-disciplinary research advising and research fellowships, will form the basis from a campus graduate group with the capacity to grant degrees in green chemistry.
